Dancers in this level will be given more challenging exercises at the barre and they will begin to work on arm placement and adagio combinations away from the barre. Dancers will also begin to focus on steps that move them across the floor, as well as begin to work on simple petite allegro combinations.

Intermediate Ballet, Intermediate/Advanced Ballet and Advanced Ballet

In these classes, students will be exposed to full-length ballet classes. These classes are designed for students who want to be involved in a pre-professional atmosphere. They will meet many times during the week depending on the class they are placed into. Meeting many times during the week will help the dancer become stronger, more flexible and will prepare them for performances on the stage.

Contemporary Ballet

In this class, Intermediate/Advanced and Advanced ballet students will learn a modern based warm-up and across the floor combinations and choreography. Students will need to have a strong classical ballet background to experiment with the progressive movements.

Variations

In this class, Advanced Pointe dancers will learn pieces of choreography from classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty.

SALSA

Salsa

Salsa is the rage! As evidenced by recent commercials, advertisers have found this hot Latin dance sell. Salsa with its sexy hip movements along with the flashy turns and spins is one of the most sensual, energetic dances you will learn.

HIP HOP

Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began among urban African Americans in New York City in the early 1970s, and has since spread around the world. Some consider beatboxing the fifth element of hip hop; others might add political activism, hip hop fashion, hip hop slang, double dutching (an urban form of rope skipping) or other elements as important facets of hip hop. The term has since come to be a synonym for hip hop music and rap to mainstream audiences.

JAZZ

JAZZ is a more free formed style of dance than Ballet but will also include stretches, barre work and center floor combinations. Choreography will be taught.

Jazz began as the popular dance moves of the early 1900's. At the time, jazz music was the popular music heard on the radio. The dance steps took on the name jazz because of jazz music. There, that wasn't so hard, was it? Pretty simple actually. Yet, that leads us to another question, does the dancing we call jazz today fit its name?

Ballet is easy to recognize. As soon as you see the turned out feet, hair in a bun, and fancy arms, you know that you are watching ballet. Jazz is tougher to figure out. It is a label we put on dances seen in Broadway shows, MTV videos, concert dance companies like Hubbard Street, street dancers, drill teams, and tap dancers. While these styles seem very different, they all have a common root.

The key elements of jazz music are syncopation, individual style, and improvisation. The original jazz dancing carried these same elements. Syncopation is what gives jazz music and dancing its edge and excitement. It is not monotonous and dry. Changes happen often and are unexpected. Sudden.

The various styles of jazz dance have grown from the emphasis on individual style and improvisation. As seen in the hip-hop dancers of today, jazz dance emphasizes individual _expression. Each teacher, dancer, and choreographer brings a unique style into the mix. Conformity is frowned upon.

In addition to syncopation and individuality, connection with the music is another element of jazz dance. The music and the dance go hand in hand. Jazz dance directly expresses the music; whether it is jazz, blues, or rap.

PILATES

PILATES concentrates on the core muscles (abdomen) strengthening the entire body from the inside out. Longer, leaner looking muscles can be achieved through Pilates. Flexibility, strength and complete body toning are also benefits of Pilates. Mats & balls will be incorporated in each class and are available at the studio for complimentary student use.

TAP

TAP is a stimulating rhythm class teaching basic to advanced steps including time steps, turns, across the floor, choreography and combinations. This is a fun class that promotes coordination and concentration. Tap shoes and non-restrictive clothing must be worn.

Tap Dance, style of American theatrical dance, distinguished by percussive footwork, that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Some descriptive step names are brush, flap, shuffle, ball change, and cramp roll.  The sources of tap dancing include the Irish solo step dance, the English clog dance, and African dance movements.

"Bojangles" Robinson became America's most famous tap dancer. The style was further expanded in the 1930s and 1940s, when dancers such as Fred Astaire, Paul Draper, Ray Bolger, and, in the late 1950s, Gene Kelly added movements from ballet and modern dance. In the late 1970s and early 1980s interest in tap dance underwent a resurgence.
